Our Cardiac Care Unit

Our 32-bed unit cares for patients requiring CABG, valve repair/replacement, complex repair of aortic aneurysms or dissections, and heart and lung transplantation surgeries. We partner with our Heart Failure team for pre-operative management and post-operative implantation of Ventricular Assist Devices for bridge to transplant, recovery, and destination therapies. We often care for patients with multiple heart surgeries, complex valve replacements, atrial ablation, MAZE procedures, and revisions of previous congenital heart defect repairs. Our nurses are experts in advanced critical care technologies including Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Intra-Aortic Balloon Counterpulsation, ECMO, ventilator management, and various Ventricular Assist Devices.

Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague is an RN practicing as a full partner on the healthcare team, demonstrating safe practice within the professional practice model. They possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice, as outlined in the position description addendum. They work closely with the interprofessional team to coordinate care across the continuum, providing individualized care based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age considerations. The nurse seeks feedback, assumes leadership roles, and understands how nursing practice impacts organizational goals. They ensure compliance with all regulations and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Apply Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) methods to enhance patient care safety, efficiency, and equity.
  • Evaluate and integrate current evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences for optimal healthcare delivery.
  • Collaborate effectively, applying systems thinking for problem-solving and decision-making to support Penn Medicine's vision.
  • Recognize patients and families as full partners in care, respecting their preferences and needs.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through lifelong learning, adherence to the ANA Code of Ethics, participation in professional organizations, and community outreach.
  • Minimize risks through effective systems and individual performance.
  • Utilize appropriate information technology for communication, knowledge management, error mitigation, and decision support.
  • Engage in cooperation and collaboration within inter- and intra-professional teams to ensure safe, quality outcomes.
Credentials
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • BLS/CPR as per American Heart Association standards
  • Registered Nurse license in PA (Required)
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
  • BSN from an accredited nursing school or equivalent experience, including over 15 months of relevant professional nursing experience and completion of the Nurse Residency Program if applicable.
