Unit Overview

The Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (CICU)/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 24-bed unit in the HUP Pavilion. Staff are trained to care for both CICU and PCU patients, splitting their time between the two after orientation.

We manage complex cardiac conditions such as cardiogenic shock, life-threatening arrhythmias, acute myocardial infarction, advanced heart failure, adult congenital heart disease, postpartum cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, and acute coronary syndrome. Our facility is equipped for advanced monitoring and interventions, including central venous, arterial, and pulmonary artery catheters, mechanical ventilation, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), targeted temperature management (TTM), and ventricular assist devices (VADs and Impellas).

Primarily a medical cardiology unit, we care for patients pre- and post-durable VAD implantation, before organ transplants, and during recurrent admissions, separate from postoperative cardiothoracic/vascular surgery care. We also care for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, and minimally invasive procedures.
