Job summary

Montefiore Medical Center’s Blood Bank Lab in the Moses campus in the Bronx is seeking a Clinical Lab Technologist for night shifts (12:00am–8:00am) with alternate weekends. The role performs routine and emergency tests on blood and body fluids using automated and manual equipment, maintains QC/QA records, and ensures timely data review and reporting.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and emergency tests on blood, serum, spinal fluid and other body fluids using automated and manual equipment.
• Review data prior to release.
• Report panic/abnormal values.
• Maintain QA/QC data and resolve QC failures as procedures require.
• Prepare reagents, take inventory, and assist supervisor as needed.
• Maintain all records and maintenance logs for equipment.
• Assist with phone inquiries and LIS data entry.
• May supervise technicians and train new staff.
• Maintain a clean work area per Infection Control guidelines.

Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites. The Blood Bank Clinical Lab Technologist will perform routine and emergency tests on blood and other body fluids using a variety of automated and manual instrumentation in a timely manner. Maintain equipment and records according to department procedures and regulatory agencies guidelines in the areas of QA and QC. Use independent judgment to solve technical and procedural problems. In some instances, ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time is necessary.

Essential Functions:

• Perform routine and emergency tests on blood, serum, spinal fluid and other body fluids using automated and manual equipment, depending on procedure. Monitor specimens to ensure work is completed
• Review data prior to release
• Report all panic, abnormal, etc. values
• Maintain quality control data on tests performed, resolve QC failures and document actions as stipulated by laboratory procedures
• Prepare reagents and take inventory, and advise supervisor as required
• Maintain all records of work performed and keep maintenance logs of equipment
• Assist with answering the telephone and perform order entry in the LIS system, as necessary
• May have individual responsibility for the work of a laboratory unit and may provide leadership for technicians
• Assist with the training of new employees
• Maintain clean work area in accordance with Infection Control guidelines
• Perform other laboratory related tasks under the direction of a supervisor as needed

Qualifications:

• Position requires at least a Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, medical technology preferred
• New York State Department Laboratory Technologist License or a limited permit are required. Applicants must obtain the provisional permit within the probationary period of three month for continued employment. Prior to obtaining the provisional permit, associates may not release any patient reports
• Laboratory and hospital information system computers, variety of automated equipment and other laboratory equipment is required
• This position is located at the Moses campus in the Blood Bank Lab. The hours are 12:00am -8:00 am with alternate weekends.
