Job description

Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for evaluating, performing, interpreting, and validating the accuracy and validity of test results. Demonstrates a progression of clinical knowledge and experience by performing testing procedures on various biological specimens using manual or automated methods. Responsibilities include routine testing, quality control, routine maintenance of instrumentation, and troubleshooting, applying innovative procedures and problem solving.

Qualifications

Non-certified applicants who meet eligibility requirements for certification may be appointed temporarily for up to 2 years at the entry level and may not be promoted or converted until certification is obtained under 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2). This appointment cannot be extended.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy.
  • English Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology, etc., from an accredited institution.
  • Certification: Must have either (1) or (2): (1) Generalist certification as an MLS by ASCP BOC or AMT; (2) Generalist certification as an MT by ASCP BOR or AMT.
  • Grandfathering: Candidates may qualify under the VA Grandfathering Provision if applicable.
Grade Determinations:

Details for GS-7, GS-9, and GS-11 levels including responsibilities, experience, education, and KSAs are provided in the original description. Candidates must meet specific criteria for each grade, including experience or higher education, and demonstrate necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Duties

Major duties include performing advanced laboratory procedures, recognizing deviations, troubleshooting, maintaining equipment, conducting quality control activities, and supporting laboratory quality assurance. The position requires effective communication, adherence to safety policies, and participation in competency and proficiency testing programs. Work involves using various computer applications and supporting laboratory operations.

Work schedule is full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Compensation includes a competitive salary, paid time off, parental leave, childcare subsidies, retirement benefits, and federal insurance options. Telework is not available, and this is not a virtual position.
