Job summary

Cook County Health is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Assistant to perform phlebotomy, collect specimens, and support lab workflows at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital. You will work under supervision, greet patients, verify orders, and ensure timely processing of specimens.

The role requires phlebotomy certification, CPR, and at least one year of relevant experience, with rotating shifts and weekend work possible. Salary is per hour and commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (must provide proof at interview).
• Certified Phlebotomist or Certified Medical Assistant (must provide proof at interview).
• One year of work experience as a Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant is required.
• Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association (must provide proof at interview).
• Must train and draw blood on all age groups and complete 100 successful collections within first 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Provides phlebotomy services in inpatient, outpatient, or other areas as required.
• Demonstrates competency for age-related phlebotomy techniques and sample processing.
• Verifies specimen receipt, assessment, and pre-analytic processing.
• Assists technologists with specimen setup and analysis in laboratory sections.
• Uses LIS to enter patient test orders from requisitions and add-ons.
• Transports specimens and blood products within the hospital as needed.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
