Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Pathology and Laboratory Service is seeking a Medical Technician (MLT) to perform clinical laboratory and anatomic pathology duties.

The role covers pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic steps with guidance appropriate to an entry developmental level. Responsibilities include CLIA-waived testing, specimen handling, quality control, and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Qualifications

• Citizenship is required for this Federal position.
• MLT certification or eligibility; recognized certifying bodies accepted.
• English language proficiency is required for appointment.
• Grandfathering provision may apply for current VA employees in this occupation.
• Grade determinations GS-5 to GS-6 depend on experience and KSAs.

Responsibilities

• Perform CLIA-waived testing and related laboratory procedures.
• Handle pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic steps in specimen processing.
• Maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory equipment.
• Communicate critical results promptly to physicians and nursing staff.
• Work Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
