Job summary

University of Maryland Medical System seeks a Clinical Laboratory Assistant I to support multiple laboratories under direct supervision. You will assist medical laboratory scientists with routine testing in accordance with CLIA requirements.

Responsibilities include accessioning specimens, ensuring correct patient identification for billing, QA documentation, and handling specimens safely. This role requires a high school diploma and at least two years of relevant hospital experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of two years of work experience as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant I (CLAI) or equivalent in a clinical or hospital setting required.
• Additional credit hours in biology and/or chemistry preferred.

Responsibilities

• Receives and accesses patient samples into the Laboratory Information System; ensures accurate and timely entry; maintains accurate patient identification for billing.
• Processes specimens (centrifuges, aliquots, and other handling) and delivers to specific laboratories; stores specimens appropriately.
• Identifies and resolves specimen integrity issues (mislabeled samples, QNS, etc.) and documents information for QA.
• Performs add-on testing according to procedures.
• May perform waived to moderate complexity testing.
• Answers phones and responds to customer inquiries.
• Resolves customer complaints/issues and documents actions.
• Communicates test results and descriptions; ensures high customer satisfaction with internal and external customers.
• Reviews and acts on test pending lists.
• Troubleshoots instrument issues with some guidance.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
