Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support medical laboratory scientists under direct supervision. You will receive and accession patient samples, input data into the Laboratory Information System, and help ensure accurate patient identification and billing information.

Responsibilities include processing and delivering specimens, resolving specimen integrity issues, performing add-on testing as needed, and assisting with waived to moderate complexity

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of two years of work experience as a CLAI or equivalent in a clinical or hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Receives and accession patient samples into the Laboratory Information System.
• Processes specimens and delivers them to specific laboratories as required.
• Saves or preserves specimens in appropriate storage such as refrigerator or freezer.
• Identifies and resolves specimen integrity issues and documents details.
• Performs add-on testing according to departmental procedures.
• May perform waived to moderate complexity testing.
• Answers telephones and responds to customer inquiries.
• Resolves customer complaints and documents actions taken.
• Communicates test results and descriptions to internal and external customers professionally.
• Reviews test pending lists and assists with related duties.
• Troubleshoots instrument problems with supervision as needed.
