Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (Charleston VA Health Care System) seeks a Clinical Laboratory Scientist to perform testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Diagnostics.

The position requires thorough knowledge of lab testing procedures and quality control, with duties including accessioning, testing, and documentation under supervision.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed when VA policy allows
• English language proficiency required for spoken and written English
• Education: a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university
• Certification options include Generalist MLS (ASCP BOC or AMT) or MT (ASCP BOR or AMT) or Categorical/Specialist (ASCP or AMT)
• Categorical/Specialist certifications permitted for higher-graded positions within the lab
• Grade determinations: CLS GS-07 to GS-11 with experience or education requirements
• Duties include testing across Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Diagnostics
• Proficiency testing, quality control, instrument maintenance, and adherence to biosafety regulations
• Work schedule options include 8:00am-4:30pm, 4:00pm-12:00am, or 12:00am-8:00am with rotating weekends

Responsibilities

• The incumbent tests in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Diagnostics.
• Accession samples and requests with proper documentation.
• Operate manual and automated testing techniques and perform quality control.
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; troubleshoot as needed.
• Adhere to biosafety and biosecurity policies; communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
• Work under supervision to develop CLS procedures and complete assignments.

Education

Bachelor's degree or higher in medical technology or related science
