Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in New Jersey seeks a Generalist Clinical Laboratory Scientist for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service of the VA New Jersey Healthcare System campus.

The role rotates to Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology/Molecular, and Urinalysis; weekend, holiday, and night shifts may be required. Applicants must meet education and certification requirements; EDRP eligibility is noted.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of professional clinical laboratory science principles, practices, concepts and theories.
• Knowledge of laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures.
• Skill in informatics - laboratory data flow and processes.
• Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair instrumentation.
• Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret results.
• Ability to read, interpret and apply complex written instructions.
• Ability to communicate, consult, and interact with health care team and patients.

Responsibilities

• Rotates to various benches in Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Microbiology/Molecular, Urinalysis.
• Works weekends, holidays and night shifts as priorities require.
• Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures and tests.
• Maintains and documents optimal functioning of lab equipment.
• Performs quality control and quality assurance activities with statistical methods.
• Interprets results and suggests follow-up tests as needed.
• Trains new employees and students in laboratory practices.
