Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree with concentration in Health Care Ethics as required.
  • Eight years of experience as a clinical ethics consultant and educator.
  • Knowledge of clinical ethics policies and hospital policy implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide formal and informal clinical ethics consultations to patients, families, and practitioners.
  • Lead monthly clinical ethics rounds in ICUs to foster dialogue and ethical decision‑making.
  • Deliver clinical ethics education for faculty and staff on bio‑ethical principles and practices.
  • Coordinate the policy sub‑committee of the Institutional Ethics Committee to integrate ethics into hospital policies.
  • Coordinate medical futility review processes to align with applicable acts and hospital policies.
  • Prepare and review materials on patient rights and clinical ethics to ensure regulatory compliance.

Job Summary

Provides education and infrastructure support to healthcare practitioners regarding bio‑ethical issues.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Master’s Degree with a concentration in Health Care Ethics.
  • Licenses/Certifications: None.
  • Experience: Eight (8) years of experience as a clinical ethics consultant and educator, including drafting and implementing clinical ethics policies.
Principal Accountabilities
  • Provides informal and formal clinical ethics consultation to assist patients, families, and practitioners involved in medical decision‑making with difficult cases.
  • Develops and participates in monthly clinical ethics rounds in intensive care units to encourage dialogue and decision‑making based on bio‑ethical principles.
  • Provides clinical ethics education for faculty and staff to disseminate information regarding bio‑ethical principles and practices, facilitating implementation in the hospital setting.
  • Coordinates the policy sub‑committee of the Institutional Ethics Committee to assure integration of bio‑ethical principles into hospital policies and procedures related to patient care.
  • Coordinates the medical futility review process to ensure it is conducted according to the Texas Advance Directives Act and hospital policies.
  • Prepares, reviews, and oversees all printed material on patient rights and clinical ethics to ensure consistency with applicable state and federal regulatory guidelines and hospital policies.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures and standards within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department‑based goals contributing to organizational success; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of the community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences.
