Position Overview
The Clinical Dietitian levels I and II competently provide and document nutrition care to patients as applicable to the practice area.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
- Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
- For Clinical Dietitian I: May be registry eligible, but must pass the RD exam within the first 6 months of employment.
Advancement and Continued Employment
- Promotion from Clinical Nutrition I to II required one year after passing the RD exam.
- Maintain Registered Dietitian status and CPR training for outpatient clinic practice.
Experience Requirements
- Clinical Dietitian I: Less than one year of acute care nutrition care experience.
- Clinical Dietitian II: One or more years of acute care experience as a Registered Dietitian, unless grandfathered in.
Preferred Experience
- For Clinical Dietitian II: Experience in counseling within outpatient or acute care settings, especially if in outpatient clinics.
Education and Training
- Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or related field from an accredited institution.
- Preferred: Specialty certifications, training in weight management, motivational interviewing, and experience with clinical research protocols.
Independent Actions
- Perform nutrition care activities per departmental policies.
- Cannot provide care to end-stage renal patients until one year post-registration.
- Post-competency: modify diets, order snacks/supplements, manage enteral feedings, and take measurements.
- Communicate with healthcare team and food service regarding patient needs.
- Provide staff in-services.
Other Requirements
- Work weekends as assigned.
- Ability to work in diverse environments.
- Adherence to the Code of Ethics for dietetics.
- Travel to satellite clinics as needed.
- Flexibility for evening hours in pediatric outpatient positions.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, reaching, repetitive motions; strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, logical thinking; ability to handle a fast-paced, noisy environment with multiple priorities.
