Purpose and Scope
Supports FMCNA’s mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy. Adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program, including following all regulatory and FMS policy requirements. Ensures quality patient care while maintaining cost-effective clinical operations in accordance with all legal, compliance, and regulatory requirements. As the Charge Nurse, manages daily decisions to ensure continuity of care, maintaining patient and staff safety, and oversees the delivery of safe, effective, and quality outcomes.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide guidance, support, and direction to direct patient care staff, including informal and formal feedback for performance evaluations. Participate in staffing, hiring, firing, and disciplinary actions, recommending disciplinary measures to the Facility Administrator as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with all company and facility procedures, policies, and regulations set by state and federal agencies.
- Approve or disapprove time and personnel schedule changes in the absence of the Facility Administrator, ensuring proper documentation.
- Participate in patient care plan meetings.
- Maintain current knowledge of dialysis practices through scheduled in-services.
- Train and orient staff as needed.
- Observe and guide staff to ensure proper techniques and policy adherence.
- Promote OSHA compliance and maintain a safe, clean working environment.
- Manage shift operations efficiently and effectively.
- Conduct staff meetings with the Facility Administrator to communicate updates and issues.
- Meet routinely with the Facility Administrator regarding personnel and patient care issues.
- Supervise documentation of patient information.
- Coordinate with Staff RNs in charge during relief capacity.
- Assess daily patient care needs and assign tasks accordingly.
- Take primary responsibility in emergencies.
- Respond to dialysis treatments, communicate with physicians, and implement care changes as directed.
- Monitor patient conditions and supervise dialysis activities.
- Collaborate with the care team to optimize patient outcomes.
- Administer medications as prescribed.
- Serve as a resource and subject matter expert for staff.
- Supervise and participate in care plan development.
- Admit new patients following facility procedures.
- Educate patients and families about ESRD, dialysis, diet, and medications.
- Supervise equipment use, operation, and safety.
- Perform testing and verification procedures as outlined.
- Complete Nurse’s Technical Training Program/Water Quality Facility.
- Assist with special projects and staff interviews.
- Promote efficient use of supplies.
- Participate in monthly Quality Assurance meetings.
Additional responsibilities may include focus on specific departments or locations, as detailed in applicable addenda.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Work includes desk and computer tasks, patient, staff, and physician interactions, with travel between facilities.
- Environment typical of healthcare settings, with potential exposure to infectious materials.

Supervision
Direct supervision of Patient Care Staff and Ward Clerk as assigned.
Education
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing program (R.N.).
- Licensed and registered in the applicable state.
Experience and Skills
- At least 12 months of nursing experience plus 6 months in dialysis care, in either chronic or acute settings.
- Preferred: Medical/surgical nursing background.
- Supervisory or management experience preferred.
- CPR certification required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
