Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

Under General supervision, perform cancer genomic laboratory procedures leading to the formation of an accurate clinical reports using the International System for Cytogenomic Nomenclature. Works under the direction of senior techs and Leadership. Displays significant independence with routine tasks.

Responsibilities
  1. Perform benchwork, analysis, and reporting of genetic or genomic assays consistently with a high level of accuracy and efficiency.
  2. Maintain lab areas and equipment including QC and validation documentation.
  3. Contribute to an environment of safety and focus on quality.
  4. Perform pre-director tech checking of straightforward and complex cases and reports in areas of high competency.
  5. Contribute moderately to operations beyond routine testing with supervision (assist with quality management, methods development, revising or writing SOPs).
  6. Make solid decisions regarding workflow in the absence of lead.
  7. Be a resource for straightforward technical issues within area of expertise; be able to offer guidance to proceed. For areas outside personal expertise, provide general guidance and identify additional resources.
  8. Troubleshoot basic equipment or assays issues with moderate assistance.

Perform as assigned:

  1. Assist with the validation and implementation of new or improved processes.
  2. Assist members of lab management to improve operations, investigate and implement new technologies, streamline workflow strategies, organize, and evaluate QC/QM record.
  3. With moderate assistance, gather and analyze data for lab use, or for potential publication.
  4. Assist with orientation and training of lab staff.
  5. Assist with daily planning to handle workload according to available resources.
  6. Contribute to the continuing education of staff either through directly presenting material or investigating other resources.
  7. Represent the lab at Fred Hutch meetings to address interdepartmental issues, especially technical issues.
Qualifications

Required:

  1. BA/BS in related scientific field.
  2. Typically, at least three years' experience in a Cytogenetics/genomics lab OR completion of a formal certified training program in Cytogenetics/genomics and two years' work experience.
  3. Certification as CG(ASCP)CM or MB(ASCP)CM or international equivalent with on-going documentation of CE comparable to ASCP programs.
  4. Solid knowledge of Cancer Genomics of hematological disorders and related diagnostic testing.
  5. Good Troubleshooting Skills.
  6. Strict Attention to Detail.
  7. Strong Communication Skills.
  8. Strong Computer Skills.
  9. Works independently on routine tasks.
  10. Ability to apply general guidelines and knowledge to unique situations to make sound decisions.
  11. Ability to inspect/critique other's work.
  12. Must be able to differentiate between colors and pass a standardized color vision screen to perform this role.

This position will be day shift; routine Saturday and/or Sunday shift required.

This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $41.82 to $62.72 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
