Overview

Northern Illinois University ( NIU ) is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University-Higher Research Activity located in DeKalb, IL. DeKalb is a diverse and growing community providing residents with a small-town feel and the benefits of a large university. The Speech-Language Pathology program is part of the interdisciplinary School of Allied Health and Communicative Disorders and offers a bachelor's degree in communicative disorders, a master's degree in communicative disorders with a specialization in speech-language pathology, and a multicultural certificate in speech-language pathology. Faculty in Audiology, Physical Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology collaborate in clinical and research endeavors. The prospective candidate will work with a diverse student and clinic population and enjoy a comfortable work/life balance. Excellent off-campus sites are available for practicum, research, and grant development. The school includes a 27,000 sq. ft. multidisciplinary clinic space which houses the Speech-Language-Hearing and Physical Therapy Clinics. For more information about the program, visit http://www.chhs.niu.edu/slp/ We are inviting applications for a full-time, twelve-month, promotable, clinical faculty position subject to funding at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor within the Speech-Language Pathology program. Faculty rank is dependent on experience, qualifications, and Board policies.

The faculty member will positively contribute to committee service within the program, university, community, and profession, provide student advisement to graduate students and undergraduate students,;and coordinate community outreach programs. Responsibilities include supervising in the NIU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and participation in interdisciplinary committees. Position Summary

The Clinical Assistant Professor is responsible for all aspects of direct patient care, will provide clinical instruction to graduate and/or undergraduate students, will serve on committees within the university and/or professional organizations, and may provide classroom instruction to graduate and/or undergraduate students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide differentiated and culturally responsive clinical instruction to SLP students and other students;
  • Provide onsite clinical services to patients in the NIU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and engage in community partnerships;
  • Positively contribute to service within the university (program, school, college, university levels) and profession;
  • Provide student advisement and mentorship;
  • Contribute to curriculum development and program advancement;
  • Collaborate within the campus and community to promote the advancement of the program and the mission of the University;
  • Maintain CCC - SLP and Illinois licensure in speech-language pathology.


Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Earned Master's degree in speech-language pathology or related field;
  • Current CCC - SLP , and eligibility for IL licensure in speech-language pathology;
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience as a licensed SLP post-Clinical Fellowship Year ( CFY );
  • Expertise in areas that complement expertise of existing faculty to ensure depth and breadth across the scope of practice as required by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology;
  • Demonstrated experience committing to diversity and promoting inclusive work and learning environments that foster creativity and innovation.


Additional Requirements
  • Ability and willingness to contribute to meeting the program's instructional needs;
  • Strong oral, written, visual, and electronic communication skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact in a positive manner with diverse faculty, staff, patients, students, and clinicians with varying economic and cultural backgrounds;
  • Strong organization, problem-solving, and counseling skills;
  • Demonstrated knowledge in evidence-based practice;
  • Ability to teach academic and clinical skills to students;
  • Ability to adhere to program's clinical requirements including immunization policies;
  • On-campus instruction, supervision, and service delivery.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in:
    • teaching in a speech-language pathology program;
    • participation on university committees/departmental projects;
    • utilization of course management systems to deliver organized and meaningful content;
    • scholarly activities (e.g., research presentations, publications, grants).
  • Multilingualism with a current need for speakers of Spanish-English and African American English.
  • History of engagement and service to the profession at the local, state, and/or national level.
  • Expertise in providing services to clients from ages three (3) to twelve (12).
  • Availability for late afternoon and early evening service delivery.
  • Eligibility for an Illinois Professional Educator Licensure.
  • Experience providing care to diverse populations.
  • A record of professional service, research, and experience developing programming grants.
