Job description

The Clinic Phlebotomist Certified collects and processes high quality laboratory samples, ensuring precise patient identification to assist in the health management of those patients. This role processes physician orders for laboratory testing in established turnaround times through both the practice and laboratory information systems. Working under close supervision, this role supports obtaining and handling patient specimens, and provides valuable support to the Laboratory Manager through organizing data, maintaining required reporting, and assisting with analysis, as well as other organizational tasks to maintain the integrity of laboratory operations.


Prepares and performs the collection of specimens using proper patient identification while using proper techniques for blood, throat cultures, and therapeutic phlebotomies.
Conducts point of care testing allowed by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), performing testing procedures, evaluating and reporting results accurately and efficiently, if applicable.
Communicates with and assists patients and staff in a professional and courteous manner, maintaining confidentiality, in all written and verbal interactions (phone, face to face, electronic) to ensure seamless continuum of care and reduce the risk of errors, omissions or breaches of confidentiality.
Provides verbal and written instructions to patients for specimen collection, tailoring communication to age and listening abilities to promote correct specimen collection and reduce errors for accurate test results.
Assists with processing laboratory orders accurately and cost-effectively using appropriate computer systems and promptly handles STAT requests to facilitate efficient order processing and provide optimal patient care.
Helps ensure appropriate specimen requirements and assists with resolution of billing issues to ensure proper coordination with reference laboratories and accurate billing.
Maintains sanitary work areas and replenishes supplies to creates a safe and hygienic environment and ensure smooth workflow.
Documents incidents and records safety issues to maintain a safe workplace and contribute to continuous improvement in patient care and laboratory operations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE:
Required: 1 year relevant medical or laboratory experience required

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
Required: BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare ProviderCurrent Phlebotomy licensure from one of the following approved agencies: ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) OR ASPT (American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians) OR NHA (National Healthcareer Association)OR AMT (American Medical Technologists)
