Description:
Monday-Friday
Hours Range from 6:00am - 5:00pm rotating shifts (no weekends no holidays)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Utilizes written MercyOne-North Iowa policies/procedures and universal precautions to properly
collect, handle and store blood and other body fluid from patients as indicated above under “Age
of Patients Served”.
B. Performs all assigned tests with expected precision and accuracy, following all CLIA regulations.
C. Reports in-house final results to medical staff including immediate notification of any critical
values.
D. Maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots laboratory equipment with accurate records of service.
Obtains assistance from Regional Laboratory Technical Consultant or Regional Laboratory
Manager, if needed.
E. Performs records and evaluates all required quality control results. Performs proficiency testing.
F. Prepares and processes specimens for testing including accurate documentation when ordering
for reference lab testing.
G. Maintains records and logs as required by regulatory agencies including controls, proficiency
testing, work logs, temperature recording, maintenance records, and updates in policy/procedure
manuals.
H. Completes laboratory documentation including obtaining correct orders, billing codes, and
diagnosis information. Obtains waiver of liability if appropriate.
I. Reviews and corrects all electronic health records billing reports for accuracy
J. Utilizes critical thinking skills to improve quality and customer satisfaction
K. Assists in cost containment by maintaining an adequate quantity of supplies in assigned area.
L. Communicates with patient and family according to provider orders in regards to collection of
specimens, test results, follow-up and education.
M. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.
N. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and
appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge
of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures
and treatments.
O. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and
professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or
departmental education programs.
P. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.
Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
Q. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.
R. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa
Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding
Behaviors.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
A. Maintains an adequate quantity of reagents and lab supplies with consideration to expiration
dating.
B. May perform limited radiography with appropriate training and certification.
C. Participates in the training, orientation, and education of new employees.
D. Serves as a resource person for patients and other clinic staff.
E. Functions as a team member by providing back up when needed.
F. Maintains a professional appearance


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
1. High School Diploma and graduate of a medical assistant program with certification, or non-
licensed graduate radiology tech, or high school graduate with phlebotomy experience.
B. Experience:
1. Previous laboratory experience is preferred.
C. Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes:
1. Provide customer service with tact, diplomacy, and understanding based upon patient needs.
2. Annual assessment of competency is completed every year.
3. Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.
