Job description

Clinic Lab Assistant - West Campus Laboratory Part Time - Days

Apply at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center-West Campus in Mason City, Iowa. This is a part-time, day shift position with hours from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with rotating shifts. No weekends or holidays.

Essential Functions
  1. Utilize written MercyOne-North Iowa policies/procedures and universal precautions to properly collect, handle, and store blood and other body fluids from patients.
  2. Perform all assigned tests with precision and accuracy, following CLIA regulations.
  3. Report in-house final results to medical staff, including immediate notification of critical values.
  4. Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, keeping accurate service records.
  5. Record and evaluate quality control results and perform proficiency testing.
  6. Prepare and process specimens for testing, including documentation for reference lab testing.
  7. Maintain records and logs required by regulatory agencies, including controls, proficiency testing, work logs, and temperature recordings.
  8. Complete laboratory documentation, including orders, billing codes, and diagnosis information, and obtain waivers of liability if appropriate.
  9. Review and correct electronic health records billing reports for accuracy.
  10. Use critical thinking to improve quality and customer satisfaction.
  11. Assist in cost containment by managing supplies.
  12. Communicate with patients and families regarding specimen collection, test results, and follow-up.
  13. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  14. Provide competent patient care by interpreting data and making appropriate decisions based on age-specific needs.
  15. Participate in ongoing professional development and departmental education programs.
  16. Support safety policies and proactively address safety concerns.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Functions
  1. Maintain adequate reagents and supplies.
  2. Perform limited radiography with proper training and certification (if applicable).
  3. Participate in training and mentoring new staff.
  4. Serve as a resource for patients and staff.
  5. Work as part of a team, providing backup when needed.
  6. Maintain a professional appearance.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma plus certification from a medical assistant program, or non-licensed radiology tech graduate, or high school diploma with phlebotomy experience.
  • Experience: Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Skills: Excellent customer service, annual competency assessment, and proficiency in English.
