General Summary

The Clinic Laboratory Assistant performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Prioritize incoming specimens and process according to safety guidelines. Review pending logs during and at the end of shifts.
2. Review orders for accuracy and specimen integrity. Generate and attach labels correctly, verifying patient information.
3. Distribute specimens timely, ensuring turn-around times are met, and resolve processing conflicts.
4. Prioritize workload to meet testing request priorities.
5. Perform quality control checks and notify supervisors of issues.
6. Assess and care for patients' age-specific needs, including specimen collection and following testing protocols.
7. Research and verify orders, ensure proper specimen handling, and maintain laboratory supplies.
8. Manage stock levels, reordering supplies as needed, and maintain a clean work environment.
9. Collect specimens via venipuncture, capillary, or arterial methods, following protocols.
10. Review outpatient orders for accuracy, document comments, and ensure safety practices.
11. Provide patient instructions for urine collection and diet restrictions, assist with medication administration as ordered.

Education

High school diploma or GED required.

Work Experience

One-year experience as a phlebotomist or lab assistant preferred.

Certification/License

None required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

Close mental and visual attention, standing/walking for 50% of the time, ability to lift up to 20 lbs.

Working Conditions

Exposure to infectious material, air-conditioned environment, moderate noise, possible varied shifts.
