Job summary

Trinity Health in an outpatient clinic is seeking a Clinic Lab Assistant to perform phlebotomy and provide lab support. Responsibilities include greeting patients, verifying orders, collecting specimens, and preparing lab reports in compliance with CLIA, COLA, OSHA standards.

You will operate lab equipment, maintain QA/QC, and ensure accurate documentation in the EHR while supporting clerical tasks and patient communication.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 16 years old.
• BLS certification within 30 days of hire; maintained.
• Phlebotomy training or experience preferred.
• Previous laboratory/phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Mandatory Reporter training within 3–6 months of hire; maintained.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture and capillary) and collect specimens.
• Prepare, label, and process specimens with proper documentation.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab equipment; perform quality control.
• Enter and manage data in the EHR; review billing reports.

The Clinic Lab Assistant performs phlebotomy and laboratory support services in an outpatient clinic setting. Responsibilities include greeting patients, verifying orders, collecting and processing specimens, and preparing lab orders and reports. This role ensures quality and accuracy in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational mission, values, and performance expectations.

• Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
• Performs phlebotomy procedures (venipunctu re and capillary) and collects other specimens following proper protocols.
• Prepares, labels, and processes specimens, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to regulatory and infection control guidelines (e.g., CLIA, COLA, OSHA).
• Conducts waived and routine lab testing; reports and documents the result in the electronic health record, including critical values. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots lab equipment; performs and documents quality control and proficiency testing.
• Verifies lab orders and medical necessities; completes ABNs and corrects billing codes as needed.
• Accurately enters and manages data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR); reviews and corrects billing reports.
• Maintains supply inventory; stocks areas appropriately and communicates needs to supervisor.
• Provides patient-centered service by communicating test procedures, results, and follow-up instructions clearly and compassionately.
• Assists with clerical duties including faxing, copying, filing, scheduling, and answering phone calls.
• Supports cross-coverage needs, within scope, throughout clinic/lab areas.
• Serves as a resource for colleagues and patients.
• Follows all safety, infection control, and universal precaution standards; maintains a clean and organized work area.
• Deliver patient care through patient preparation, vital sign collection, and documentation. Assist with various procedures, exams, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., tympanometry, spirometry).
• Maintain aseptic techniques during preparation, procedures, and medication administration.
• Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
• Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

Schedule: 8am-4pm or 8:30am-4:30pm

General Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Completion of medical terminology or phlebotomy training preferred.
• Previous laboratory or phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross required within 30 days of hire; must be maintained
• Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse required within 3-6 months of hire; must be maintained.
