The Cleveland Fellowship in Bioethics (CFAB) at Cleveland Clinic seeks leaders in clinical ethics to train in high-volume ethics consultations, scholarship, and program development. Fellows will work with experienced ethicists, participate in a structured curriculum, and contribute to the service mission of Cleveland Clinic while developing skills for national and international impact.

Cleveland Fellowship in Advanced Bioethics
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The Cleveland Fellowship in Bioethics (CFAB) is dedicated to training leaders in Clinical Ethics. It is our belief that a robust clinical training program must not only prepare fellows to perform clinical ethics consultation independently and contribute to existing scholarship, but also lead an ethics program. As such, in addition to developing expertise in clinical ethics consultation and furthering scholarship portfolios, fellows will develop skills that will enable them to build, revitalize or maintain existing clinical ethics programs. Our high-volume clinical service and structured curriculum ensures that professionals who complete the fellowship are prepared for a sustainable career in clinical ethics.

Fellows will train with experienced clinical ethicists and other healthcare professionals while collaborating on a high-volume ethics consultation service (>750 consultations per year within the Cleveland Clinic Health System). Most fellows participate in more than 250 ethics consultations with increasing independence and contribute to other clinical service activities. Over the course of the fellowship, fellows will gain the requisite practice experience necessary to sit for the healthcare ethics consultant certification (HEC-C) if desired. Additional opportunities exist for trainees to specialize in a chosen clinical area. The selected fellow will be expected to contribute to the service mission of Cleveland Clinic.

This is a full time, onsite fellowship. Our curriculum ensures that fellows and a diverse faculty engage in high-level discussion of critical moral issues in medicine regionally, nationally and internationally, as well as partake in reflective discussions and simulations to enhance clinical service skills. Training opportunities in communication, leadership, and program development are available. Through long-standing collaborations, there may also be an opportunity to work with ethics professionals at other health care or academic institutions in the Cleveland area (Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, the MetroHealth System, and Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center) and nationally.

Applications will be considered from professionals with terminal post-graduate degrees (MD, JD, PhD) in medicine, philosophy, nursing, social work, religious studies, law, or other fields related to the practice of clinical and academic bioethics. Priority will be given to applicants with strong potential for leadership in the field and demonstrated clinical experience.

The starting salary for the 2027-2029 cohort is competitive and total compensation includes healthcare insurance and other benefits. Trainees receive 15 vacation days and 5 personal days per year and an annual stipend for travel and conference participation.
