Job summary

Henry Community Health in New Castle, Indiana, is seeking a unit clerk/clerical technician to support a fast-paced hospital unit. Responsibilities include processing orders, scheduling tests, coordinating transfers, and maintaining patient records with telemetry monitoring where needed.

The role requires high school education and experience in a clinical/clerical setting, with strong reading, writing, and medical terminology skills. Some nursing assistant/ward clerk exposure is preferred.

Qualifications

• Must read and write well enough to follow detailed procedures.
• Must have knowledge of office procedures and equipment.
• Must be able to read telemetry monitor strips and identify arrhythmic conditions.
• Must have basic medical terminology knowledge.
• High school education or equivalent required.
• Preferred 6–12 months clinical/clerical experience in acute care and 3 months as nursing assistant or ward clerk.

Responsibilities

• Provide clerical services to assigned unit.
• Process physician orders and schedule tests and appointments.
• Coordinate with departments to arrange tests, transfers and visits.
• Monitor telemetry rhythms and report life-threatening events.
• Record patient information and rhythm strips in records.
• Support nursing staff with basic patient needs.
• Serve as a communication hub for internal and external customers.
• Perform admissions, discharges, and transfers data entry.

Job description

Responsibilities

• Works independently in providing various clerical services to their assigned unit.
• Processes physician’s orders and works collaboratively with many departments to schedule patient tests and appointments to expedite patient diagnoses and treatment.
• Required to contact and interact with other facilities in order to arrange appointments, tests, and transfers.
• May monitor telemetry rhythms for pertinent changes in fetal or cardiac rhythms and interprets rhythms and keeps nurse informed of life threatening arrhythmias.
• Technician/Clerks are responsible for monitoring blood pressure and oxygen sats and reporting changes to appropriate nurse.
• Records pertinent patient information and rhythm strips in the clinical record.
• Will assist with basic patient needs as necessary.
• Consistently acts as a focus of communication for internal/external customer service.
• Performs computer operations accurately and efficiently. Initiates and maintains admission, discharge, and transfer information.
• Responsible for accurate billing/charge entry.

Qualifications

• Successfully passes unit specific competencies.
• Requires the ability to read and write well enough to follow detailed procedures and perform basic mathematics
• Requires knowledge of office procedures and equipment
• Requires the ability to read telemetry monitor strips and interpret life threatening arrhythmic conditions
• Requires knowledge of basic medical terminology
• Requires high school education or equivalent
• Prefer six to twelve months of clinical/clerical experience in an acute care setting and at least three months experience as a nursing assistant or ward clerk
