Job summary

Women & Infants Hospital is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to join the Laboratory team. The ideal candidate will have phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting, along with a high school diploma or equivalent and a phlebotomy certificate if hired after 2010.

Strong English communication and a pleasant phone manner are essential. Responsibilities include venipuncture, specimen processing, recording results, and supporting safety and infection control standards.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent with previous phlebotomy experience in the healthcare field preferred.

• Pleasant phone manner, strong interpersonal skills and fluency in English essential.

Responsibilities

• Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture for inpatients and outpatients.
• Perform screening tests and record results; maintain related records.
• Follow departmental policies and hospital safety and infection control standards.
• Handle clerical tasks in the testing area and assist with equipment maintenance.
• Record and report results; acquire electrocardiograms as needed.
• Participate in educational programs and preserve patient confidentiality.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency, individually and part of a multidisciplinary team, in performing clinical care and assessment of all patient populations.
• Demonstrates competency in performing clinical care and assessment of patients of all ages: check which ages apply (newborns, infants, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics).
• Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and skin punctures on inpatients and outpatients.
• Performs various screening tests and record keeping associated with phlebotomy and reports results.
• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures and follows hospital safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Performs clerical functions associated with the testing area.
• Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
• Acquires electrocardiograms.
• Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
• Preserves and protects patient rights to confidentiality at all times.
