Job summary

Caltech's Quantum Photonics Group seeks a Laboratory Engineer to operate and maintain nanofabrication equipment on the Pasadena campus. You will learn to optimize deposition and etching tools, perform preventative maintenance, and document solutions for future repairs.

The role includes training lab users and contributing to a high-performance research environment. You will collaborate with a process engineer and lab staff, ensuring safety and peak equipment uptime for quantum device research

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
• Experience with semiconductor fabrication equipment operation, maintenance, repair, and installation.
• Strong craftsmanship with mechanical design, materials, tools, units and measurement techniques.
• Attention to detail and excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
• Willingness to maintain highly organized data records.
• Ability to learn quickly and transfer knowledge to others through teaching/documentation.
• Desire to meet and set high standards and work independently.
• Strong communication with supervisor, vendors, and lab users.
• On-site availability during peak hours and ability to work evenings/weekends when necessary.
• Ability to work in a cleanroom and lift up to 20 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Follow established protocols to perform qualifying runs on equipment daily or weekly.
• Assist in developing new protocols and set peak performance standards.
• Maintain organized data records to verify performance and maintenance needs.
• Administer preventative maintenance plans and perform instrument alignments.
• Perform routine repairs and coordinate vendor service when needed.
