Job summary

SASED is seeking a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse to join its Medical Program in Lisle, IL, as a Medical/Teacher Assistant. This role supports students with medical needs in the classroom and acts as a teaching assistant to help achieve educational goals while ensuring health and safety.

The position requires Illinois nurse licensure, CPR certification, and ISBE paraprofessional or substitute approval.

Responsibilities

  • The Medical/Teacher Assistant's primary responsibility is to the individual student's health and safety needs.
  • Assist in development of classroom health plans and provide staff inservice on health plans.
  • Perform medical procedures required for students with medical needs (blood glucose monitoring, catheterizations, gastrostomy care, tracheostomy care).
  • Monitor daily routines and assist with activities of daily living; document health status daily.
  • Provide care during student transportation as required.

This is a nursing position that supports the medical needs of the students in the classroom. When not providing direct nursing service, the nurse acts as a teaching assistant to support the educational goals of the students in the classroom.

Salary: $29.59-$33.36 per hour.

SASED has numerous positions available througout the Cooperative. Our Medical Program is located in Lisle.

Job Goal:

The Medical/Teacher Assistant will work with students with unique medical needs that require a higher level of medical knowledge. They will perform medical procedures not normally provided by the regular teacher assistant in order to maintain students in the least restrictive environment. They will also act as active members of the educational team in providing services to students. The Medical/Teaching Assistant will work under the supervision of the Certified School Nurse assigned to the student's program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Medical/Teacher Assistant's primary responsibility is to the individual student's health and safety needs. When these needs are met, the MA/TA will follow the duties outlined for the general Teacher Assistant.
  • Under the direction of the Certified School Nurse, the MA/TA will assist in the development of the classroom health plans and provide classroom staff inservice regarding health plans.
  • Perform medical procedures that are necessary for students who require medical assessment (i.e., blood glucose monitoring, catheterizations, gastrostomy tube care, tracheostomy care.)
  • Monitor and assist students in daily routines and help students follow individual daily schedules including activities of daily living.
  • Document procedures and health status of students on daily log.
  • Communicate changes in the health status of students to CSN and Teacher.
  • Handle medical emergencies appropriately and classroom problems quickly and efficiently and report to the CSN.
  • Provide instruction to students individually and/or in small groups following the Teacher's lesson plans and with Teacher direction.
  • Accompany, assist and monitor students as needed in all other areas of school program outside of the classroom (i.e. mainstream classes, community, vocational, transportation to and from home if appropriate, etc.)
  • Provide medical care during student transportation as required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Dexterity to type, write, utilize scissors, and office machines.
  • Physical ability to perform all physical management techniques with fidelity.
  • Physical ability to lift and position students.
