Job summary

Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System in Streamwood, IL is seeking a Teacher Assistant / Paraprofessional on a PRN basis to support students with educational and behavioral programs and help rebuild self-esteem under the principal's direction.

The role assists the teacher in classroom management, acts as a positive role model, and participates in behavior charts, grading homework, and crisis intervention to ensure a safe learning environment.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma or GED is REQUIRED.
• Bachelor's Degree preferred.
• Knowledge of educational, child development and classroom teaching/management theories with a good understanding of educational and therapeutic interventions is preferred.
• Valid Illinois driver’s license with no suspensions or tickets for major traffic violations for at least three years

Responsibilities

• Actively moves around classroom to facilitate learning.
• Communicates effectively with teacher.
• Available to all students by proximity and visual contact.
• Encourages student engagement without disrupting instruction.
• Encourages students to make appropriate choices in class and school environment.
• Manages student behavior during instructional interaction.
• Develops awareness of each student’s special needs.
• Maintains awareness for student safety and whereabouts.
• Assists in maintaining behavior management plans.
• Collaborates with teacher and principal on school projects and student needs.
• Prepares and maintains each student’s Behavior Charts daily and quarterly with teacher.
• Assists in grading objective homework as directed by the teacher.
• Assists in the instructional process as directed by the teacher.
• Assists in duplicating instructional material as directed by the classroom teacher.
• Uses crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation to provide a safe environment.
