Summary:
Investigates, settles, and supervises claim files for assigned accounts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receives and processes initial telephone, electronic or faxed reports of losses.
- Conducts claim file audits of contracted agents.
- Investigates commercial trucking physical damage, cargo and general liability claims on accounts as assigned by Senior Vice President and/or Trucking Claims Supervisor.
- Timely processes claims in compliance with industry fair claims practices and applicable state regulations.
- Reviews policy provisions to determine if a loss is covered under the policy.
- Obtains police reports, appraisals, statements from witnesses, estimates of property value.
- Assigns and directs outside adjusters and other professionals to evaluate the circumstances of a loss.
- Extends settlement authority to adjusters.
- Negotiates settlements within policy limits with claimants and/or their attorneys, and submits recommendations for large offers to Senior Vice President and/or Trucking Claims Supervisor for review and approval.
- Directs that settlement checks be issued, and obtains proofs of loss or releases for adjusted claims.
- Communicates orally, in person or through written reports with Trucking Claims Supervisor and Senior Vice President on the status and rationale of cases pending.
- Establishes and periodically adjusts loss reserves on pending cases within assigned accounts.
- Responds to claims-related consumer complaints on aspects of claim handling filed with state insurance departments.
- Notifies reinsurers of losses which may exceed company’s retained limits.
- Coordinates claim settlements with reinsurers.
- Keeps current with latest developments in the industry by reviewing newsletters from various sources, attending seminars, reviewing legal opinions, updates, and changes in laws of various states.
- Travels and works beyond normal business hours as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- The ability to perform each of the essential duties satisfactorily.
- Working knowledge of the property and casualty business, in particular trucking and/or heavy equipment claims and auto physical damage.
- An understanding and knowledge of policy language of products the company offers and claims practices.
- An understanding of company processes, including claims, accounting, and IT.

Education and/or Experience:
- Associates or Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
- Five or more years of industry experience.
- Industry continuing education (IIA, CA, etc.)
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Normal office environment.
Ability to travel via motor vehicle and airplane.
