The Bar Plan Mutual was established to provide attorneys with a stable, financially secure source of lawyers’ professional liability insurance. Created in response to carriers leaving the Missouri market, the company now proudly serves attorneys in Missouri, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, and Tennessee.
The Claims Attorney manages moderate- to high-complexity claims from initial coverage inquiry through liability assessment and timely resolution, including matters resolved through mediation or litigation. The role focuses on controlling indemnity and expense exposure while clearly communicating developments and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders. This position reports to the Vice President of Claims.
Responsibilities:
- Investigate, negotiate and settle complex primary professional liability claims for lawyers.
- Investigate and analyze coverage under primary liability insurance policies; make coverage determinations; draft coverage correspondence; effectively communicate coverage positions to policyholders and other stakeholders; manage claims involving coverage litigation.
- Manage litigation filed against insureds; appoint and manage defense counsel; proactively work toward expeditious and economical resolution of claims.
- Communicate with underwriting as needed to manage claims and to alert of any significant developments.
- Promptly communicate with Vice President of Claims on coverage issues and adverse case developments, and provide information on pertinent issues affecting the lawyers' professional liability product lines.
- Collaborate with team members to analyze complex issues, evaluate alternative approaches, develop action plans, and communicate conclusions clearly in writing and verbally.
- Maintain and adhere to The Bar Plan’s guidelines and procedures.
- Ensure proper adherence to internal and external reporting requirements.
Requirements:
- JD required.
- 3+ years of professional liability claims or litigation experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Sound comprehension of insurance coverage issues posed by professional liability policies.
- Ability to analyze and convey summations of complex issues both orally and in writing; recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans.
- Ability to manage complex litigation, set loss and expense reserves and evaluate settlement values.
- Work collaboratively and as team player.
- Ability to proactively self-manage a caseload.
- Hybrid position following initial onboarding.
Pay and Benefit information:
- The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000.
