Job Description

The Licensed Athletic Trainer collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide preventive services, emergency care, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. The role also assists the Athletics Program, coaches, athletes, and school faculty to develop and enhance the student athletic program and performs additional duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Be on campus 2–6 p.m., Monday through Friday to monitor practices, unless a game conflict arises.
• Provide coverage for events Monday–Saturday during Fall, Winter, and Spring sports seasons as outlined.
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals for preventive and emergency care, assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation.
• Monitor athletic injuries and develop injury prevention training and programs.
• Assist athletes and parents in connecting with Orthopedic Physicians, Physical Therapists, and other follow‑up services.
• Provide training and opportunities for students in the Sports Medicine class.
• Coordinate ongoing efforts to improve the athletic training room: submit annual supply/equipment orders, inventory supplies, and work with the Athletics Secretary.
• Assist coaches and faculty in enhancing the student athletic program.
• Recommend strength and conditioning training to coaching staff.
• Carry out objectives of the sports program as outlined by the Athletic Director.
• Assist coaches with administrative, program coordination, and developmental duties.
• Instruct participants in individual, group, and team techniques, tactics, and physical training necessary for success.
• Implement training and coaching philosophies consistent with the Kennewick School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Conditions of Employment

• National Athletic Trainer’s Association Member (in good standing).
• Washington State Department of Health licensure.
• Certified in First Aid/CPR from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• Preferred: First Aid/CPR instruction certification.
• High school graduate.
• Provide transcripts of highest level of education within 30 days of employment.
• Perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Pass a basic skills test.
• Pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
• Complete Safe School web‑based training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.

Required Qualifications

• National Athletic Trainer’s Association Member (good standing).
• Washington State Department of Health licensure.
• Evidence of licensed athletic trainer and compliance with WIAA and district rules.
• First Aid/CPR certification (preferred secondary: instruction).
• Excellent attendance, punctuality, dependability, self‑discipline, and initiative.
• Positive recommendations and evaluations from past/current employers.
• Meet and maintain coaching standards set by the district and WIAA.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Proficient with basic computer programs, record keeping, time‑entry, and email.
• Uphold board policies and administrative procedures.
• Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Attend in‑service trainings or other meetings as required.
• Demonstrate ability to assess and correct safety issues.
• Maintain a tactful, cooperative, effective relationship with students, parents, staff, and management.
• Approach assigned work professionally, fostering teamwork and continuous improvement.

• Demonstrated short‑ and long‑term organizational and management skills.
• Three current recommendations.
• Positive role‑model behavior.
• Clear philosophy for the desired coaching level.
• Coaching experience in the sport.
• Effective public relations experience.
• Ability to work cooperatively and communicate with students, parents, coaches, administrators, and the community.

Physical Demands

• Mobility: Stand, walk, push or pull 18–26 lbs., sit, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, use hands for typing and handling.
• Sense: Talk/listen, communicate verbally, taste, smell. Visual: close, far, color, peripheral, depth perception, focus adjustment.
• Lifting: Move up to 18–26 lbs., lift overhead, move quickly in emergencies.

Work Environment

• Work outdoors in temperatures ranging from –10 °F to 100 °F plus.
• Possible exposure to wet or humid conditions.
• Moderate noise level.
