J.S. Held is hiring an entry to mid-level Forensic Civil/Structural Engineer (PE or SE) to support investigations, prepare technical papers, and serve as an expert witness.

The role involves residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, with travel to project sites across the US and emphasis on safety while climbing roofs and evaluating envelopes. You will work within a dynamic Forensic Architecture & Engineering team, handling field observations, data collection, and report preparation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET-accredited program.
  • PE or SE license required.
  • 0–5 years as a forensic engineer (entry to mid-level).
  • Experience or willingness to access rooftops for inspections.
  • Proficiency with building codes and industry standards.

Job Description

Our Forensic Architecture & Engineering team is seeking an entry to mid-level Forensic Civil/Structural Engineer (PE or SE) to enhance our already robust team of professionals supporting our clients throughout the US. Our engineers routinely perform forensic investigations, provide consultation, prepare and deliver technical papers; and serve as expert witnesses. Our areas of practice include residential, commercial, and industrial buildings’ roofing, fenestration,foundationand envelopes; hazard assessments and resulting damage; design and construction defect evaluation; and premise liability evaluations.This positionwill require regular local and regional travel to project sites,utilizingladderstoworkat heightsincludingsteep roofpitches(withfall protection when needed). Active involvement in professional associations and societies is encouraged and supported.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conducts field observations,testingand data collection,
  • Prepares technical reports detailing observations made, testing results, research conducted,analysis,and opinions or recommendations.

  • Engages in client-relations business development/marketing.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (from an ABET accredited schoolrequired)
  • PE or SE license
  • Highly qualified and experienced EI/EITs are considered
  • 0 to 5 (entry tomid-level) years of experience as a forensic engineer
  • Experience and/or willingness to learn in climbing moderate to steep-pitched roofs using hand rope assist, rope-and-harness, aerial lifts, etc.
  • Willingness to workat heights
  • Familiar with modern building codes and industry standards
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willing to travel and conduct site inspections
  • A desire to learn, excel and grow with us and within the profession
  • Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in engineering design or construction
  • Experience conducting damage assessments and forensic investigations (preferred but notrequired)
  • Storm damage and building envelope evaluation experience is a plus
Physical and Mental Job Qualifications
  • Must be able tolift upto 50 pounds at times
  • Must be able to travel to various project sites and conduct field investigations
  • Must be able to work at heights
  • Must be able to work in hot and cold environments, both indoors and outdoors
  • Must be able to access and work on pitched roofs, scaffolds, lifts, and other elevated surfaces and in enclosed spaces (attics, crawlspaces, etc.) withappropriate personalprotection
  • Must be able to lift, transport, set up, andutilizean extension ladder to access roofs and other elevated surfaces
  • Physically able to climb, stand, walk, kneel, and crouch for extended periods of time

The estimated salary range for this role is $86,000 - $91,000 USD. The salary range is based on a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skillset, experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
