Position Summary

The Civil/Structural Engineer position will support the modification, expansion, or development of new Duke Energy electric substations in Florida. This position is based in Lake Mary Florida and primarily focused on performing complex civil/structural engineering designs, mentoring junior engineers, reviewing consultant engineering firm designs, and continuing to improve our internal Civil/Structural engineering procedures and job aids.

For the Engineer III level:

This is the advancing level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressingly complex and varied.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related engineering experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
For the Senior Engineer level:

This is a career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
  • Minimum of six (6) years of related engineering experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Responsibilities
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long‑term results and assess impacts on a system‑wide basis.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; apply extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position.
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies, procedures and equipment.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Coaches and mentors other engineering and non‑degreed engineering professionals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer
  • Skilled in Civil/Structural Engineering theories and principles. Progressive Civil/Structural Engineering experience with emphasis on highvoltage substations and utility infrastructure.
  • Proficient in researching engineering designs, evaluating alternatives, making sound decisions, and presenting recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to serve on multidisciplinary teams and interact with stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Skilled in the principles of project management.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects concurrently while meeting scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior engineers and designers, including technical oversight and QA/QC review.
  • Knowledge of Civil/Structural design, including:
    • Grading, drainage, and erosion & sediment control
    • Foundations (drilled piers, spread footings, piles)
    • Oil containment systems, fire walls, and retaining structures
    • Strong understanding of geotechnical principles, soil reports, and foundation selection for substation applications
    • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NESC, ACI, ASCE, and local/state permitting requirements.
    • Structural/foundation analysis tools (e.g., LPILE, RISA, Mathcad or equivalent).
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in principles of project management
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Experience in the utility industry
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 3 full workdays per regular workweek.
