The Civil/Structural Engineer is a technically focused engineering professional responsible for the design and analysis of civil and structural scope on oil and gas projects, from conceptual development through construction support. This role is intended for a Civil or Structural Engineer with approximately 3 – 5 years of industry experience, ideally on oil and gas facilities such as compressor stations, gas processing plants, gathering systems, pipeline facilities, and tank batteries.
The Civil/Structural Engineer will perform calculations, develop and check design deliverables, and coordinate civil/structural interfaces with process, mechanical, piping, and EI&C disciplines. Under the guidance of senior engineers and project leads, the engineer will take increasing ownership of the civil/structural scope on assigned projects.
The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, discipline engineers, designers, vendors, construction personnel, and clients to make sure designs are technically sound, constructible, safe, compliant, and cost effective.
This position offers a clear path for professional growth, including mentorship toward PE licensure, broadening project responsibility, and exposure to the full lifecycle of projects.
Responsibilities
- Perform civil and structural engineering design and analysis for upstream, midstream and downstream facilities and pipelines, including compressor stations, gas processing and treating facilities, meter stations, pipeline facilities, and tank facilities.
- Design foundations for process equipment, vessels, tanks, skids, and pipe supports, including mat, spread footing, pier, and pile foundations as required by site conditions.
- Design and analyze foundations for reciprocating and rotating equipment, including dynamic analysis for compressor and pump foundations, using ACI 351.3 and vendor requirements.
- Design steel structures such as pipe racks, pipe supports, equipment platforms, stairs, ladders, access walkways, and building supports.
- Develop site civil designs, including site grading, drainage, access roads, pads, secondary containment, and stormwater management.
- Interpret geotechnical reports and apply site-specific soil data, including consideration of expansive soils and frost depth, to foundation design.
- Prepare and check engineering calculations, specifications, material take-offs, and design criteria documents.
- Work with designers to produce and review civil/structural drawings, including plot plans, grading plans, foundation plans and details, steel framing plans, and connection details.
- Review vendor drawings and data, including skid loads, anchor bolt layouts, and equipment foundation requirements, for compliance with project requirements.
- Coordinate civil/structural interfaces with piping, mechanical, process, and EI&C disciplines, including piping loads, equipment layouts, cable tray and conduit supports, and underground utilities.
- Participate in design reviews, 3D model reviews, and constructability reviews.
- Support construction by responding to RFIs, reviewing contractor submittals, performing site visits, and assisting with field troubleshooting and design changes.
- Assess existing structures and foundations for facility modifications, expansions, and equipment additions.
- Support preparation of engineering scopes, hour estimates, and cost estimates for civil/structural work on proposals and project work authorizations.
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations, including ACI 318, ACI 351, AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, API 650, PIP, and OSHA requirements.
- Support permitting activities as required, including stormwater, SPCC containment, and local building or grading permits.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 3–5 years of civil/structural engineering experience, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT/EI) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, or the ability and intent to obtain PE licensure within 2 years.
- Experience designing concrete foundations and steel structures for industrial or energy facilities.
- Experience or familiarity with dynamic foundation design for compressors and other rotating/reciprocating equipment is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as RISA, STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, or similar, and foundation design tools such as spMats, MAT3D, or similar.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D; familiarity with 3D model review tools (such as Navisworks) is a plus.
- Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including ACI, AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, and API.
- Ability to interpret geotechnical reports, vendor data, and piping stress/load information.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating technical interfaces.
- Ability to travel to project sites, client facilities, and other Tegre offices as required.
- Strong written, verbal, and electronic communication skills.
- Positive attitude, initiative, sound judgment, and integrity, with a commitment to technical excellence and continual professional development.
- 10 – 20% travel required depending on project mix.
