The Opportunity

Structural Engineering Technicians contribute to the design, analysis, and detailing of structural components and systems that support Grid projects such as Overhead Transmission Line. The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Engineering Technician plays a key role in supporting the development of high‑quality engineering deliverables for complex infrastructure projects. Under general supervision, this position performs technical tasks requiring advanced knowledge of engineering principles and practices, focusing on creating and modifying structural models, drawings, and details using industry‑standard design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and PLS‑CADD. The role also provides technical guidance and may offer directions to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Functions in a project engineering technician capacity.
  • Supports engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables under general direction.
  • Applies foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions.
  • Utilizes digital tools and design software (CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables.
  • Provides technical guidance and may offer directions to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.
  • Applies knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes, and BV policies and procedures.
  • Reviews project requirements and determines the correct format and contents for required deliverables.
  • Proactively applies BV Quality Program to deliverables, demonstrating personal accuracy and supporting continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency and assists in ensuring deliverables comply with specific codes and standards suitable for the project.
  • Applies basic engineering principles and established design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
  • Makes judgment calls regarding deliverables and input interpretation.
  • Handles difficult technical assignments within an area of expertise and provides technical guidance to other professionals.
  • Performs design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and records.
  • Reviews the deliverables of others.
  • Defines work assignments and maintains schedules.
  • Programs control systems or participates in other plant start‑up activities associated with a specialized area of expertise.
  • Coordinates with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
  • Supports field activities, focusing on the needs of internal clients while understanding external clients’ main interests and drivers.
  • Seeks and shares knowledge of latest technologies and processes.
Preferred Qualifications

Diploma or Certificate preferred. Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Typically a minimum of 5 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • This position would require working in a typical office environment. The position may entail prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, and the professional would ideally be able to maintain focus and attention to detail throughout the workday. The position may also require physical tasks during site visits, including crouching, grasping, and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
