Job summary

A leading engineering firm in Washington, D.C. is seeking an experienced structural engineer to join their Structures Division. The role requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in structural analysis and design, with a focus on concrete, steel, masonry, and wood structures. Responsibilities include conducting evaluations, preparing drawings and specifications, and mentoring junior staff. We want someone passionate about structural engineering and problem solving. Our Washington, D.C. Structures Division provides structural engineering services with an emphasis on new design, repair and rehabilitation of constructed works, and investigation and performance evaluation. We implement innovative techniques for design, analysis, and project management. SGH laboratories support our design and investigation work with material, mechanical, and environmental testing. This combination of experience, capability, and dedication to improving the practice of engineering positions SGH as a leading provider of engineering services. The Washington, D.C. Structures Division is currently looking to hire a structural engineer with a minimum of 5 years of industry experience. This individual will conduct structural evaluation, design, and investigative work; perform and review analysis and design calculations; execute and manage the preparation of drawings and specifications; manage project budgets and schedules; assist with mentoring junior staff; interact with clients; and support and manage projects in construction.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Work on a wide range of structural engineering analysis and design projects involving steel, concrete, masonry and wood structures.
  • Implement design or analysis tasks using a variety of building codes.
  • Assist in the preparation of drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Execute the construction‑administration phase of projects, including bid assistance, submittal review, site meetings, observations of completed work, etc.
  • Plan and conduct site investigations to document existing conditions.
  • Help mentor and develop less experienced engineers.
  • Interact with project clients.
  • Support proposal development, project scoping, and coordination of internal resources to meet project deadlines and budgets.
  • Pursue professional activities to gain professional recognition.
What You’ll Need
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural analysis and design of concrete, steel, masonry, and wood frame structures. Proficiency with behavior and performance of materials.
  • MS in Structural Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university.
  • PE license; progress toward SE licensure or interest in obtaining it is a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, TMS, NDS, and other applicable standards and codes.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design tools such as RAM, RISA, ETABS, SAP2000, and Revit.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • A proactive, team‑oriented mindset with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to remote job sites not accessible by public transportation, and if applicable, an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Compensation

The below range is a good faith estimate pursuant to applicable equal pay and pay transparency laws. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors including the candidate’s experience, qualifications and work location. Base salary is a part of SGH’s industry leading Total Compensation package. Our Total Compensation package includes base salary, pay for extra hours worked, an annual discretionary bonus program, generous paid time off, and health and wellness benefits with a special emphasis on substantial SGH contributions to medical insurance premiums and SGH’s Profit Sharing & 401(k) Plan. This position is eligible for a $7,500 sign‑on bonus. Consulting Engineer, Consulting Architect or Project Consultant II: $93,600-$120,120 USD.
