Job summary

KPFF Consulting Engineers seeks a Civil Roadway Design Intern in Boise, Idaho to gain hands-on experience with roadway design, plan development, and construction support. You will assist with roadway design tasks, prepare plans and quantity estimates, and support CAD workflows under senior engineers' guidance.

The internship emphasizes learning agency standards, site conditions, and constructability, with a 10-12 week summer term and mentoring support.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA in undergraduate coursework.
• Ability to interpret basic survey information, plans and technical documentation.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong technical, organizational and problem-solving abilities and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Assist with roadway design tasks involving horizontal and vertical alignments, roadway geometry, grading, drainage and related civil improvements.
• Help prepare plans, profiles, cross sections, details, quantity calculations and cost estimates under guidance.
• Support development and organization of design files and technical deliverables using CAD software.
• Learn to apply agency design criteria, standards and project requirements to real-world transportation projects.
• Coordinate with drainage, utility, structures, traffic, survey, environmental and other project disciplines.
• Contribute to team discussions, quality-control reviews and collaborative problem-solving.
• Participate in our Weekly Intern Training Series and other mentoring opportunities.

As a Civil Roadway Design Intern at KPFF, you will work alongside experienced engineers and technical staff on transportation infrastructure projects. You will gain hands‑on experience with roadway design, plan development, engineering calculations, and construction support while learning how design decisions respond to agency standards, site conditions, constructability, and the needs of the traveling public.

• Assist with roadway design tasks involving horizontal and vertical alignments, roadway geometry, grading, drainage, and related civil improvements.

• Support development and organization of design files and technical deliverables using civil design and computer‑aided drafting software.

• Current enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
• Basic understanding of civil engineering fundamentals and an interest in roadway or transportation design.
• Ability to interpret basic survey information, plans, and technical documentation.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong technical, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities, with the ability to work collaboratively.

• Completed or enrolled in coursework related to transportation engineering, surveying, hydrology, hydraulics, or civil design.
• Familiarity with Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, or comparable design software.
• Previous internship, research, design‑team, or field experience related to civil or transportation engineering, including experience with civil design and computer‑aided drafting software is preferred.
• Interest in pursuing a career in civil and transportation engineering.

Interns primarily work in a standard office setting with occasional travel to bridge and project sites.

Field visits may involve walking, standing, kneeling, climbing slopes or embankments, and navigating uneven terrain.

Must comply with all safety requirements in the office and on project sites.

The internship typically runs 10-12 weeks during the summer, with full‑time hours.
