Job summary

The Civil Rights Staff Attorney for the Edley Center on Law & Democracy at UC Berkeley supports substantive civil litigation and policy work, including amicus briefs, research, and advocacy for state and local authorities.

The position requires advanced knowledge of civil rights law, excellent writing and collaboration skills, and the ability to manage projects and mentor student researchers while engaging with coalitions and government partners.

Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge in civil rights law and practice.
  • Expertise in legal research, analysis, and advocacy strategy development.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience practicing civil law (litigation and/or legislation/policy).
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.

Responsibilities

  • Supports Center cases and projects at the direction of the Executive Director.
  • Conducts legal research and writing on civil rights and state authority matters.
  • Drafts and files amicus briefs, motions, and other materials.
  • Mentors student interns and manages project workflows.
  • Liaises with coalition partners to meet deadlines and advance litigation or policy work.
