Job summary

The ACLU of Kansas seeks a visionary Legal Director to lead statewide impact litigation and legal advocacy. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, this senior role may be based in Overland Park or Wichita.

The position requires managing a team and a docket, and frequent collaboration across campaigns (voting rights, immigrants’ rights) and with national partners. Travel to courthouses statewide is expected.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree required and membership or eligibility for bar licensure.
• Minimum seven years of civil litigation experience, including civil rights or related federal and state court work.
• Experience managing legal staff and overseeing a litigation docket.

Responsibilities

• Develop vision and set overall strategy for the ACLU of Kansas legal program.
• Lead and manage the statewide litigation docket consistent with campaigns.
• Serve as lead counsel for cases and supervise legal staff and fellows.
• Draft briefs, legal memos, and opinions; oversee discovery and motions.
• Collaborate with Know Your Rights materials and other programs.
• Represent the organization publicly and coordinate media strategies for legal cases.
