Job summary

Kids for the Future is seeking a Civil Engineering Intern to gain hands-on experience in planning and design of commercial sites. You'll collaborate with licensed engineers and design professionals on real-world infrastructure projects and develop technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Ideal candidates are undergrad civil engineering students pursuing an ABET-accredited degree, with a valid driver's license and willingness to learn AutoCAD Civil 3D; 40-hour weeks, on-site in Oklahoma

Qualifications

  • Pursuing Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Strong reading, writing and basic mathematics skills required.
  • Willingness to learn design software and industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, create detailed site drawings and layouts for land development and site plans.
  • Assist in developing 3D models and evaluating design criteria.
  • Calculate dimensions, areas and volumes as needed for proposals and documentation.
  • Follow QC/QA procedures and safety policies; support project team as assigned.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Civil Engineering Intern will gain valuable hands-on experience in the planning and design of commercial building sites while collaborating with experienced engineers and design professionals. This internship offers the opportunity to contribute to real-world infrastructure projects and develop technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills in a dynamic team environment. The role is ideal for a motivated student who is eager to learn, embrace technology, and discover the rewarding possibilities of a career in civil engineering.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Under oversight of licensed professional engineer, utilizes computer software to create detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts for land development and site plans, including but not limited to building footprint, travel ways, parking, grading, utility design, drainage facilities and erosion control.
  • Helps develop 3D models of projects using surfaces, horizontal alignments, vertical profiles, typical sections, and various design criteria.
  • May calculate dimensions, square footage, profile and component specifications and material quantities using calculator or computer.
  • Participates in and ensures QC/QA procedures are followed. Maintains accurate design standards and procedures in assigned work.
  • Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Pursuing Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in civil engineering from ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • English language skills: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and other employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Reasoning skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc. AutoCAD Civil 3D proficiency preferred.
  • Organizational skills: ability to prioritize and organize tasks; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Remote connectivity device (e.g., smart phone, tablet, etc.) with data plan sufficient for company requirements, including multi-factor authentication, time and mileage tracking, expense reimbursement, e-mail, and virtual communications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a productive/technical nature.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
  • Ability to sit and manipulate computer mouse up to eight hours per day.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk, including over uneven surfaces, for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to see clearly 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office/production setting with adequate ventilation.
  • Occasionally outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (rain, sun, wind, etc.) for site visits.
WORK SCHEDULE
  • Fixed schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, including required core hours.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
