Job summary

IMEG is seeking a Civil Engineering Intern in Aberdeen, SD for a 10-12 week summer program. You will work closely with engineers on analysis, design, inspections, and permit tasks while learning the civil engineering trade.

This hands-on internship offers mentorship, real project experience, and exposure to transportation and public works projects within a 100% employee-owned firm. In-office schedule and structured program ensure practical, hands-on growth.

Qualifications

• Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required.
• Strong interest in design consulting and the civil engineering trade.
• Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written forms; teamwork oriented.

Responsibilities

• Assist with engineering analysis, design, field inspections, and report writing.
• Prepare permit applications, site drainage and grading designs while learning the Civil Engineering trade.
• Support project work within the budget and coordinate with cross-disciplinary teams.
• Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions promptly.
• Conduct periodic job site observations and review project documents for accuracy.

IMEG is hiring a Civil Engineering Intern in Aberdeen, SD to work closely with a team of experienced engineers and consultants on engineering analysis, design, field inspections, writing reports, preparing permit applications, site drainage and grading designs, and learning the Civil Engineering trade. Over 10-12 weeks, you'll gain hands-on experience supporting real project work while learning the civil engineering trade.

In this role, you'll help the team work within project budgets, collaborate with cross-functional disciplines, and support project progress through documentation and job site observations. You'll contribute to transportation and public-works projects while delivering resilient, environmentally responsible infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

• Assist with engineering analysis, design, field inspections, report writing, preparing permit applications, site drainage and grading designs, and learning the Civil Engineering trade
• Assist with design portions of a project related to discipline systems according to code and IMEG standards
• Support project work within the project’s monetary budget while collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations
• Assist with researching resources for commercially available equipment
• Assist with good client relations, project design notebook, and provide documentation for permanent record files
• Assist with coordinating design and schedule with other disciplines such as architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical and equipment suppliers
• Assist with documenting design decisions, meetings, and instructions from client promptly while monitoring project design progress
• Assist with review of all project documents for accuracy and completeness prior to requesting a final check
• Assist with preparation and issuance of addendum information
• Conduct periodic job site observations and all other services as required by the contract services agreement

Required Education

• Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required

Required Skills/Abilities

• May be required to assist with field duties such as surveying and materials testing
• Strong interest in design consulting
• Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs, CAD software and Building Information Model
• Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Preferred

• Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

• SDDOT construction administration, county bridge inspections, and on-call municipal engineering
• Microsurfacing design, lift station and forcemain work, survey, and hydraulics
• Frequent bridge, highway, and survey work driven by county and city clients
• Recent work includes SDDOT Sioux Falls Construction Administration, Transportation; Aberdeen Bridge Inspections, Transportation; and Groton Lift Station & Forcemain, Water/Wastewater.
