Job summary

Mead & Hunt in Rapid City, SD is seeking a limited-term, full-time civil engineering intern to support airport project work from May/June 2027 through August/September 2027.

The intern will assist engineers, technicians, and surveyors with taxiways, runways, and related tasks; perform measurements, prepare pay estimates, report prep, field inspection, survey work, and basic research. A valid driver's license and ability to travel 75-100% are required.

Qualifications

• Completed two semesters of civil engineering coursework from an accredited college or university.
• Hands-on construction field experience or observations are a plus.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil3D, and basic surveying/documentation is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers, technicians, and surveyors on civil airport projects (taxiways, runways, aprons).
• Perform measurements and quantity calculations and help prepare pay estimates.
• Assist with project report preparation and field inspections/survey work.
• Conduct basic technical research and writing; undertake other assigned tasks.

As a result of our expansive growth, we have a position available for a limited-term, full-time civil engineering intern to work in the construction field on airport projects based in Rapid City, SD starting in May/June 2027 and ending in August/September 2027.

This intern will be responsible for assisting engineers, technicians, and surveyors with civil engineering projects in the following areas:

• Assisting engineers, technicians, and surveyors with civil airport projects including taxiways, runways, aprons, etc.
• Performing measurements and quantity calculations and preparing pay estimates
• Assisting with project report preparation
• Performing field inspection, documentation, and survey work
• Some technical research and writing
• Other tasks as assigned.

A valid driver’s license, the ability to pass background checks to gain access to airport sites, and frequent travel to construction project sites 75%-100% of the time will be required.

Successful candidates must have completed at least two semesters of college-level coursework in civil engineering, construction management, or related field from an accredited college or university by date of hire.

The ideal candidate will have experience with any/all the following:

• Construction field experience including observation and documentation
• Previous internships involving construction, DOT projects, surveying and/or civil site inspections
• Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and Civil3D software
• Understanding of basic grading and testing processes
• Knowledge of airport planning and/or design
• Survey tasks
