Job description

Civil Engineer, Transportation

Michael Baker International – Michael Baker’s first office in Alaska opened in 1942. Since then, we have played a key role in some of Alaska’s most renowned infrastructure projects, including groundbreaking projects on the North Slope and the Trans‑Alaska Pipeline System. We continue to focus on cold‑regions engineering—pipelines, transportation, hydrology, geotechnical, specialty professional services, permitting and regulatory compliance, and GIS and LiDAR mapping.

We are seeking a highly motivated engineer to join our transportation team in either our Fairbanks or Anchorage offices. This role offers opportunities to grow and develop your engineering skills through a variety of civil design projects including highways, airports, building sites, and oil and gas infrastructure, as well as fieldwork experience in data collection and construction contract administration.

Responsibilities
  • Work under the supervision of Senior Engineers and Project Managers; develop and professionally seal plans, specifications, and estimates for civil highway, aviation, and/or site engineering development projects with extensive use of AutoCAD/Civil 3D and ArcGIS software. Guide and mentor junior staff in related work.
  • Prepare studies, design analysis, construction documents, drawings, maps, reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare quantities and construction cost estimates.
  • Perform occasional site visits, potentially to remote locations (travel to job sites may be required).
  • Perform activities in support of public involvement or environmental requirements for assigned projects.
  • Assist project managers with tracking and maintaining project schedules and budgets.
  • Attend training to develop and maintain skills, including seminars, professional publications, and in‑house systems/management training.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with coursework relevant to working in the transportation engineering field.
  • Licensed Professional Civil Engineer in Alaska.
  • Minimum 8 years of civil engineering experience (roads, highways, utilities, structures, or site design).
  • Extensive experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D (preferred) or other civil design software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong degree of self‑initiative, and desire to learn and apply engineering skills to develop creative designs that address complex problems.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; experience with Bluebeam Revu and ArcGIS is a plus.
Compensation

The salary range for this position is $111,655–$170,864. This compensation range is a good‑faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
