Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania invites applications for a Civil Engineer Trainee in the PennDOT District 5 Office in Allentown. This one-year rotation program develops core civil engineering skills across bridge, transportation, and soils disciplines while exposing you to project exposure and teamwork.

Starting salary is $67,658 per year with possible telework up to 50% after probation, and a path toward professional licensure.

Qualifications

• One year of civil engineering experience and a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field that includes or is supplemented by major coursework in civil engineering.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Job description

Start your path as a Civil Engineer Trainee with the Transportation and learn how engineering supports communities. You will develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering knowledge, skills and abilities in a bridge engineering, transportation engineering and/or soils engineering environment. This role allows you to explore different areas of civil engineering and discover where you can make the biggest impact.

This role helps you build key engineering skills through a one year rotation in several units within the PennDOT Engineering District 5 Office.

As a Civil Engineer Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

• Training Rotation: Rotate through multiple engineering units to develop a strong civil engineering foundation
• Project Exposure: Work on a variety of assignments that support public safety and environmental protection
• Skill Development: Build knowledge in areas such as materials, traffic, construction, and roadway planning

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment.
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • If assigned to construction, schedule may be shifted to align with vendor controlled hours/ project
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 50%, after successful completion of the probationary period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Allentown. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,658.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• One year of civil engineering experience and a validEngineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related fieldthat includes or is supplemented by major coursework in civil engineering.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Conditions of Employment:

• This position also requires possession of a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.

Other Requirements:

• PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
