Job description

Southeastern Massachusetts | Full-Time | Hybrid Flexibility

About Strong Tree Engineering

Strong Tree Engineering (STE) is a fast-growing, technology-forward, multidisciplinary land survey, civil engineering, environmental and permitting firm serving municipalities, commercial businesses, developers, institutions and residential clients throughout New England.

Our integrated capabilities include land survey, site design, land use and planning, environmental consulting and permitting, wastewater and stormwater management, subdivisions and land development, coastal and waterfront projects, public infrastructure, trails and pathways, and more.

With offices in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut, STE continues to expand its team, capabilities and geographic reach. We are looking for an experienced Civil Engineer / Project Manager who wants to take ownership of meaningful projects, work directly with clients and decision-makers, and play an important role in the continued growth of the firm.

Position Overview

The Civil Engineer / Project Manager will be responsible for the successful management and delivery of civil engineering and land development projects from initial feasibility and scoping through design, permitting, construction and closeout.

This is a hands-on project leadership role. The successful candidate will combine strong civil engineering knowledge with disciplined project management, client communication and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.

We are looking for someone who can own projects — establishing clear scopes, schedules and budgets; directing internal production; anticipating issues; communicating proactively with clients; coordinating permitting and regulatory approvals; and ultimately ensuring that commitments and deliverables are completed accurately and on time.

For the right candidate, this role offers significant autonomy, direct access to company leadership, and the opportunity to grow into broader technical, staff and/or regional leadership responsibilities as STE continues to scale.

Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Delivery
  • Manage multiple civil engineering and development projects concurrently from concept through completion
  • Establish and manage project scope, schedule, budget, staffing requirements and deliverables
  • Maintain clear project ownership and proactively drive projects forward rather than waiting for issues or deadlines to arise
  • Coordinate engineering, survey, environmental, permitting and outside consultant resources
  • Monitor project progress, budgets and profitability and address potential schedule or scope issues early
  • Ensure commitments to clients, municipalities and other stakeholders are met accurately and on time
Civil Engineering & Technical Oversight
  • Lead and/or oversee civil engineering design and preparation of plans, calculations and technical documentation, including:
  • Site planning and grading
  • Stormwater management and drainage design
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic analysis
  • Wastewater and septic design / sewer infra
  • Utility design and coordination
  • Construction documents and specifications
  • Feasibility and land-development analysis
  • Construction administration and field observation
  • Review technical work produced by junior engineers and other project team members
  • Apply practical engineering judgment to identify efficient, constructible and cost-effective solutions
Client & Stakeholder Management
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients
  • Establish clear expectations regarding scope, schedule, deliverables and next steps
  • Maintain proactive communication throughout the project lifecycle
  • Coordinate with architects, contractors, attorneys, developers, municipalities and other consultants
  • Build long-term client relationships through responsiveness, technical competence and reliable execution
Permitting & Regulatory Coordination
  • Work collaboratively with STE's environmental and permitting professionals, to:
  • Lead and support municipal, state and other regulatory permitting processes
  • Coordinate preparation and submission of permit applications and supporting technical documentation
  • Attend and represent STE at meetings and public hearings before Planning Boards, Zoning Boards, Conservation Commissions, Boards of Health and other regulatory bodies as appropriate
  • Maintain familiarity with applicable Massachusetts land-use, environmental and engineering requirements
  • Direct and mentor junior engineers and technical staff assigned to projects
  • Delegate production work effectively while maintaining accountability for the overall project
  • Provide clear direction, timely review and constructive technical guidance
  • Help strengthen STE's engineering standards, QA/QC processes, project-management practices and internal workflows
  • Collaborate closely with STE leadership and other discipline leads as the organization continues to grow
Business & Client Growth
  • Support preparation of proposals, scopes and fee estimates
  • Identify additional opportunities to support existing clients across STE's multidisciplinary services
  • Participate in client development, strategic pursuits and relationship building
  • Contribute to the continued growth and development of STE's civil engineering practice
Example Project Types

Our work is diverse and may include:

  • Municipal and public infrastructure
  • Coastal and waterfront projects
  • Trails, parks and recreational facilities
  • Residential and commercial land development
  • Subdivisions and redevelopment projects
  • Site planning and permitting
  • Stormwater and drainage systems
  • Wastewater and septic systems
  • Environmental restoration and resiliency projects
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Approximately 7+ years of progressive site/civil engineering, land development and/or related experience
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred; experienced E.I.T. candidates actively progressing toward licensure will also be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects, clients, schedules and budgets
  • Strong technical understanding of site development, grading, drainage/stormwater, utilities and permitting
  • Experience working through Massachusetts municipal and regulatory approval processes strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD/Civil 3D and working knowledge of HydroCAD or comparable design/modeling software
  • Strong written, verbal and client-facing communication skills
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams while maintaining attention to technical detail
  • Organized, accountable and proactive, with a demonstrated ability to move projects forward and follow through on commitments

STE offers a highly competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, including:

  • Performance-based company bonus opportunities
  • Health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance
  • Retirement savings program
  • Paid vacation, holidays and personal/sick time
  • Continuing education, licensure and professional development support
  • Significant opportunity for professional growth and expanded leadership responsibility as STE continues to scale
