Stormwater Capacity and Spot Improvement Engineer (Civil Engineer III)
An Overview

Are you an experienced stormwater capital project engineer with expertise in flood mitigation, drainage practices, and stormwater infrastructure resiliency planning?

If so, consider applying for one of two Civil Engineer III positions in the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES), Stormwater Management Division. You will work on stormwater capital projects identified in the City of Alexandria Storm Sewer Capacity Study (CASSCA) and/or smaller projects under the Flood Action Alexandria initiative, which aims to mitigate flooding caused by climate change.

The Opportunity
  • Collaborate with the project team to plan, design, and construct capacity capital projects to mitigate flooding as part of the Flood Action Alexandria program.
  • Serve as a project sponsor department working with project managers, consultants, and the Department of Project Implementation (DPI) to complete stormwater infrastructure projects.
  • Evaluate project alternatives, prepare engineering estimates, designs, plans, and specifications.
  • Lead hydrology, hydraulics, and infrastructure resiliency studies, including design standards and IDF curve updates.
  • Respond to drainage and flooding complaints, conduct field assessments, and develop solutions.
  • Manage the design and construction of small to large stormwater projects, ensuring quality and compliance.
  • Address community and agency inquiries related to stormwater management issues.
  • Coordinate with contractors during construction, providing engineering guidance and inspections.
  • Assist in developing construction documents, scopes of work, and project specifications; support procurement and project management for Spot Improvement projects.
  • Present project information to community groups, agencies, and city officials.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field and at least five years of professional experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary skills and knowledge.
