Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. is seeking an engineer for its Safford operation in southern Arizona. The role focuses on site-wide water systems, hydrology, hydraulics, hydrogeology, and water quality to quantify water balance across processes, mine facilities, and stormwater.

You will collect water data, calibrate instruments, and assist with process water circuit analysis including tailings and leach stockpiles. The position requires a Civil Engineering background, proficiency in MS Excel/Word and CAD

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum.
  • Knowledge of civil, geotechnical, hydrologic or water/wastewater engineering principles.
  • Proficient in MS Excel and Word, with knowledge of CAD and analytical/mapping tools.
  • Fluency in English; ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire knowledge of engineering principles related to site-wide water systems including hydrology, hydraulics, hydrogeology, water treatment plant design, and water quality for quantifying water balance across process, mine, and stormwater areas.
  • Assist operational areas with water data measurement/collection, QA, instrument calibration verification, flowsheet mapping, updating operational rules, and standard computations/analysis for water accounting.
  • Contribute to data collection and information gathering; work with tailings storage, leach stockpiles, storm water, and mine facilities.
  • Assist with maintaining site-wide water simulation model and incorporate water use scenarios to quantify water balance performance.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Where You Will Work

In operation since 2007, Safford operations is a zero-discharge facility and one of the most sustainable mines in the United States. The operation’s commitment to utilizing advanced technologies and sustainable practices strongly emphasizes safety and environmental stewardship. Located in southeastern Arizona, close to more than 4 million acres of national forest, employees and their families can connect with the great outdoors while fishing, rafting, hiking and more. Several educational institutions also are nearby, including a Northern Arizona University satellite campus, Eastern Arizona College, and the Gila Institute for Technology.

What You Will Do
  • Acquire knowledge of and recognize engineering principles related to site-wide water systems including hydrology, hydraulics, hydrogeology, water treatment plant(process) design, and general water quality for the purposes of quantifying water balance across process, mine, and stormwater areas.
  • Assist operational areas with water data measurement/collection, Quality Assurance, instrument calibration verification, flowsheet mapping, updating operational rules, and performing standard computations/analysis for water accounting. Site-wide process water circuits are included (with focus on tailings storage facilities and leach stockpiles), as well as storm water and mine facilities.
  • Acquire knowledge of Tailings, Crushed Leach, and Water Management System. Contribute through data collection and information gathering, task execution as directed by others, routine communication of scope changes.
  • Assist with maintaining site-wide water simulation model. Incorporate water use scenarios that consider specific production plans and climate scenarios to quantify water balance performance.
  • Perform other duties as required.
What You Bring To Freeport
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum.
  • Knowledge of principles and practice of civil, geotechnical, hydrologic or water/waste water engineering or a related field of science or engineering.
  • Proficient in MS Excel and Word, with knowledge of other MS Office software and engineering tools (CAD, analytical, mapping).
  • Fluency in English
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely educated audience.
  • Present a positive, professional image.
  • Self-motivated, energetic, able to execute, and client-service oriented.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others.
  • Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering with Hydrologic, Hydraulic, Geotechnical or Water/Wastewater Engineering specialization
  • Experience with metal mining design and/or operations, especially with tailings storage facilities(dams), water dams and/or crushed leach stockpiles
  • Education/experience with water management, process design or water/waste water treatment.
  • Able to research and analyze information and draw valid conclusions.
  • Good interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills with diverse teams of technical and non-technical staff.
  • Be able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure.
  • Experience with related engineering software (AutoCAD), programming languages, GoldSim, ArcGIS.

What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently$75,000-$104,000.This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
