Job summary

VHB in Watertown, MA is seeking a Civil Engineer to join our Land Development team on a hybrid schedule. You’ll work on site civil design, grading, drainage, and utility layouts using Civil 3D and related tools, collaborating across offices and disciplines.

This early-career role offers hands-on project exposure, structured onboarding, and mentoring to support EIT/FE goals, with growth opportunities across the East Coast footprint and active involvement in professional organizations and business

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 1–3+ years of civil engineering experience in land development or site design.
  • EIT licensure or FE exam preferred (or in progress).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MS Office.
  • Experience with HydroCAD, WaterCAD, or WaterGEMS is a plus.
  • Experience developing site plans and engineering reports is valued.

Responsibilities

  • Develop site civil engineering plans and specifications for land development projects.
  • Prepare site layouts, grading, drainage, utilities, erosion and sediment control.
  • Contribute to construction documents, specifications, and reports.
  • Support stormwater management and sustainable site design.
  • Collaborate with other offices and disciplines on integrated projects.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior staff.
  • Participate in professional organizations and business development as interests grow.

How You’ll Make an Impact
Responsibilities
  • Work within a collaborative team to develop site civil engineering plans and specifications for a wide range of land development projects.
  • Prepare site layouts, grading, drainage, utilities, erosion and sediment control, and related design elements using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other tools.
  • Contribute to construction documents, technical specifications, and engineering reports, with a focus on accuracy and high-quality work.
  • Support stormwater management, utility design, and sustainable site design solutions that improve community resilience.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in other VHB offices and disciplines—including transportation, environmental, and planning—on integrated project teams.
  • As you gain experience, help train and mentor junior staff on technical standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Participate in professional organizations and business development activities as your interests and experience grow.

  • Familiarity with land development processes; knowledge of Massachusetts-area codes, ordinances, and development regulations is a plus.
Qualifications
  • BS in Civil Engineering or a related degree.
  • 1–3+ years of civil engineering experience (internship, co-op, or full-time) in land development, site design, or related areas.
  • EIT licensure or FE Exam passed preferred (or in progress).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with any of the following is a plus:
    • HydroCAD, WaterCAD, WaterGEMS
    • Microsoft Project
    • BIM 360 or similar cloud collaboration platforms
  • Experience in developing site plans, construction documents, technical specifications, and engineering reports is highly valued.

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $81,000 to $105,000 if located in Watertown, MA. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB’s Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
