Job summary

Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. (VHB) in Charlotte, NC, seeks a Civil Designer to join the Land Development Planning & Design team. You will develop site civil plans, grading, drainage, and utilities using AutoCAD Civil 3D, contributing to construction docs and reports with emphasis on quality.

You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and participate in professional activities while advancing your career in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering or related degree.
  • 1-3+ years of civil engineering experience in land development or site design.
  • EIT licensure or FE exam preferred (or in progress).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MS Office required.
  • Experience with HydroCAD, WaterCAD, WaterGEMS is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop site civil engineering plans and specifications for land development projects.
  • Prepare site layouts, grading, drainage, utilities, erosion and sediment control using Civil 3D and related tools.
  • Contribute to construction documents, specifications, and reports with high accuracy.
  • Support stormwater management and sustainable site design solutions.
  • Collaborate with offices and disciplines on integrated projects and mentorship.

How You'll Make an Impact
  • Work within a collaborative team to develop site civil engineering plans and specifications for a wide range of land development projects.
  • Prepare site layouts, grading, drainage, utilities, erosion and sediment control, and related design elements using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other tools.
  • Contribute to construction documents, technical specifications, and engineering reports, with a focus on accuracy and high-quality work.
  • Support stormwater management, utility design, and sustainable site design solutions that improve community resilience.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in other VHB offices and disciplines‑including transportation, environmental, and planning‑on integrated project teams.
  • As you gain experience, help train and mentor junior staff on technical standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Participate in professional organizations and business development activities as your interests and experience grow.

  • Familiarity with land development processes; knowledge of Charlotte‑area codes, ordinances, and development regulations is a plus.
Qualifications
  • BS in Civil Engineering or a related degree.
  • 1-3+ years of civil engineering experience (internship, co-op, or full-time) in land development, site design, or related areas.
  • EIT licensure or FE Exam passed preferred (or in progress).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with any of the following is a plus:
    • HydroCAD, WaterCAD, WaterGEMS
    • Microsoft Project
    • BIM 360 or similar cloud collaboration platforms
  • Experience in developing site plans, construction documents, technical specifications, and engineering reports is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits

The full-time annual base salary range for this position, located in Charlotte, NC, is $75,000 to $95,000. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB’s Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
