Job summary

SMEUSA is seeking a summer Co-op in Grand Rapids, MI to begin mid-May 2027 and run through late November/early December 2027. The program includes orientation and on-the-job training with SME Team Members, exposure to a wide range of construction techniques and project types, and collaboration with construction managers, contractors, and design professionals.

You will gain real responsibilities as a Co-op and play an important role on the SME Team while developing skills in geotechnical

Qualifications

• Co-ops must be comfortable using computers and software essential for in-field work, communications, and report generation.
• Must have a good driving record and be able to lift and carry equipment and samples weighing up to 50–60 pounds.
• Ability to work outside at construction sites in various weather conditions.
• Must sit, stand, stoop, and/or kneel for long periods.
• Must walk on uneven ground/terrain and have a valid U.S. driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Support field construction quality control activities.
• Gain experience in assessment/evaluation of project materials including soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials.
• Work with SME Team Members and contractors to learn and assist with adherence to project specifications.
• Assist SME engineering staff in performing field evaluations and quality control testing.
• Gain exposure to geotechnical engineering, environmental remediation, pavement design, and materials evaluation.
