Job summary

Phoenix Communications in Shrewsbury, MA is seeking a CDL A Driver / General Laborer to join a crew installing underground fiber optic infrastructure. You will drive trucks, haul equipment and materials, help set up sites, and learn to operate equipment as you gain experience.

The role emphasizes learning, taking on more responsibility, and progressing toward Heavy Equipment Operator or Working Foreman as you grow with the team.

Qualifications

• Valid CDL Class A is required.
• Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate or ability to obtain one.
• Willingness to perform physical construction work.
• Interest in learning to operate heavy construction equipment.
• Ability to work safely around trucks, equipment, traffic, and underground utilities.
• Dependable and ready to work as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Drive company trucks and haul equipment to and from jobsites.
• Haul spoils, asphalt, stone, gravel, and construction materials.
• Load, unload, and secure equipment and materials.
• Help set up the jobsite and prepare the crew for the day's work.
• Shovel, rake, sweep, and keep the work area clean.
• Help dig, clean, and backfill trenches.
• Install, cut, and fit PVC conduit.
• Compact stone and backfill.
• Assist with asphalt and roadway restoration.
• Work alongside Heavy Equipment Operators and learn how the equipment is used.
• Help spot equipment and safely guide Operators working around underground utilities.
• Learn how to operate mini excavators, skid steers, backhoes, and other construction equipment as opportunities become available.
• Take on more responsibility as your skills and experience grow.
• Support your Foreman and fellow crew members wherever needed to complete the job safely and efficiently.

As a CDL A Driver / General Laborer, you will be part of a construction crew building underground telecommunications infrastructure. This is a team position where everyone helps get the job done.

You may start your day driving a truck and hauling equipment to the jobsite, but driving is only one part of the job. Once onsite, you will work alongside Equipment Operators, Laborers, and Foremen to learn how an underground utility construction crew operates.

We are looking for someone who wants to learn, take on more responsibility, and build a career in construction.

A Heavy Equipment Operator becomes responsible for safely operating equipment such as mini excavators, skid steers, backhoes, vibratory plows, and other equipment used to install underground utilities.

A Working Foreman takes the next step. You are still working alongside the crew, but you also help lead the job. You understand the scope of work, organize the crew, communicate the daily plan, watch production and quality, and make sure everyone goes home safely.

You don't need to know everything on your first day. We are looking for people who show up, work hard, communicate, learn from experienced crew members, and earn additional responsibility.

Requirements
