Position Summary

SeamonWhiteside is in search of an ambitious and talented professional to serve as a Civil Designer in our growing Charlotte, NC office.

The Civil Designer is a growth position with primary focus on further development of the fundamentals of civil design as well as SW+ design, computer, and general office standards. This role contributes and supports the engineering team in master planning, engineering design, and research for specific tasks on projects.

The Civil Designer is expected to continue to develop necessary skills in drafting, design, and research skills to assist the engineers and project managers in the analysis of proposed and current projects. This position will continue to seek mentorship to better understand and analyze plan presentation, reliability, engineering design, project scopes and delivery timelines.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college/university preferred

Experience: 1 - 5 years’ experience, Engineering in Training (EIT) preferred

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and comment on shop drawings and materials submittals on projects
  • Review as-built of civil engineering systems provided by Surveyor
  • Demonstrate consistent achievement of SW+ billable goals
  • Consistently meet task deadlines related to projects
  • Coordinate with outside consultants involved in the project (Surveyors, Traffic Consultants, Architects, Geotechnical Engineers, MEP Engineers, Wetland Consultants, etc.)
  • Efficiently prepare CAD base sheet drawings from drawing files provided by Surveyor
  • Perform QA/QC reviews on work and better understand civil and landscape drawings
  • Prepare or direct civil plan sheets sets for construction drawings with emphasis of proper plan presentation
  • Effectively address redline comments provided by agencies and senior engineering staff
  • Perform complete quantity take-offs and cost estimates of designs
  • Assist Engineers and Project Managers in the analysis of proposed and current projects
  • Prepare civil design drawings under the direction of senior engineering staff, with minimal guidance of production effort
  • Perform hydraulic system calculations, pipe design calculations and engineering reports (drainage report, water calc reports, and project narratives)
  • Prepare comment response letter for agency resubmittals
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and site visits with senior CA personnel
  • Work to expand experience in witnessing installation, testing and inspections of site infrastructure systems (sewer/water system testing, proof rolls, SWPP inspections, etc.)
  • Review and comment on shop drawings and materials submittals on projects
  • Perform construction observations & field reports, with ability to tackle more complex projects

  • Full understanding of specific SW+ drafting standards
  • Working knowledge of design software (ICPR, WaterCAD, Civil 3D, SEDCAD, HEC-RAS, Hydraflow Express, Storm Sewers, Microstation, Geopak, InRoads, IDEAL model)
  • Working knowledge of agency regulations and design standards for specific projects across multiple jurisdictions
  • Ability to prepare preliminary plats, site plans, SWPP plans, grading/drainage plans, water/sewer plans, profiles (road/water/sewer/drainage), and construction details
  • Understanding of civil project specifications and the production thereof
